Demolition is the part of a renovation that looks the most dramatic — walls opened up, the old bathroom carted out, dust everywhere. It's easy to think of it as just clearing the decks. But demolition week is actually one of the most important stages of the whole job, because it's when we find out what's really behind your walls and floor.
Stripping back to the frame
We start by protecting the rest of the house — floor coverings down, doorways sealed off, a clear path to get material out. Then the old tiles, vanity, toilet, shower screen and wall linings come out, and the room is taken right back to its timber studs and floor. Doing this carefully, rather than just swinging a hammer, means we can see the condition of everything and avoid damaging anything that's meant to stay.
Finding the surprises
Almost every older bathroom is hiding something. Once the walls are open, we regularly uncover things that were never visible from the outside:
- Old, corroded or undersized pipework that's due for replacement while it's easy to get to.
- Water damage or rot in the framing and floor from a shower or seal that's been leaking quietly for years.
- Previous waterproofing that was patched, skipped, or never done properly in the first place.
- Wiring that no longer meets current standards and is worth updating while the walls are open.
Why we'd rather find it now
None of this is bad news — it's exactly why demolition is done thoroughly. It's far easier and cheaper to fix a problem while the room is open than to discover it after new tiles are down. Tiling over soft, water-damaged framing just hides a problem that will come back worse. We'd rather find the rot in week one and fix it properly than have you paying for it again in a few years.
Setting up everything that follows
Once the room is stripped and any repairs are sorted, the plumber and electrician can rough-in new pipework and wiring exactly where the new layout needs it. From there the room is prepped and waterproofed to Australian Standards before any tiling begins. A clean, sound, properly repaired frame is what every stage after it is built on — get demolition right and the rest of the renovation runs a lot smoother.
