Ensuite Renovation Ideas: Making the Most of a Small Space

An ensuite is usually the smallest bathroom in the house, which makes good design even more important. Done well, a compact ensuite can feel like a private hotel bathroom. Here are the ideas we use most often to get the best out of one.
Keep the layout simple
In a small ensuite, the simpler the layout, the better it works. Keeping plumbing where it is also keeps costs down. A walk-in shower, a slim vanity and a back-to-wall toilet is a classic combination that uses the space efficiently.
Go frameless and walk-in
A frameless glass shower screen — or a fully open walk-in shower where space allows — lets your eye travel across the whole room, which instantly makes a small ensuite feel bigger and more luxurious. It's also much easier to keep clean.
Smart storage and light
- A wall-hung vanity with drawers keeps clutter off the bench and floor.
- Recessed shelf niches in the shower avoid bulky caddies.
- A large mirror or mirror cabinet bounces light around and visually doubles the space.
Little luxuries
Because ensuites are small, a few premium touches don't cost as much as they would in a big bathroom. Underfloor heating, a heated towel rail and quality tapware all add a sense of luxury to your daily routine for a modest spend.
