Most homeowners are surprised by how much happens during a bathroom renovation — and how many trades are involved. A typical bathroom takes around three to four weeks from start to finish. Here's how that time is usually spent.
Week 1 — Demolition and rough-in
We strip the old bathroom back to the frame, then the plumber and electrician rough-in any new pipework and wiring. If walls are moving or windows changing, that structural work happens now too.
Week 2 — Waterproofing and screeding
Walls and floors are prepped, then waterproofed to Australian Standards. This is the single most important stage, and it needs time to cure properly — rushing it is never worth it.
Week 3 — Tiling
Floor and wall tiles go down, then they're grouted and sealed. Tiling is precise, time-consuming work, and good preparation in the earlier weeks is what makes it look sharp.
Week 4 — Fit-off and finishing
The vanity, toilet, tapware, shower screen and accessories are installed, painting is finished, and everything is sealed and cleaned ready to use.
What can affect the timeline?
- Custom or back-ordered items like vanities and shower screens.
- Changes to the plan once work is underway (variations).
- Drying and curing times for waterproofing and screed, which can't be rushed.
- Unexpected repairs, such as water-damaged framing found during demolition.
